Hundreds of fans will gather around Columbia Park’s main stage area at the seventh annual Highland Jazz and Blues Festival on Saturday afternoon to get a dose of alternative country music flavor that only The Gourds can provide.

But for Gourds’ member Kevin Russell, their fans’ anticipation can’t compare to the excitement he feels about returning to a place he calls home.

Nantwich Jazz Festival Line-up

ORGANISERS of the Nantwich Jazz, Blues and Music Festival are set to unveil next year’s all-star line-up at a concert night featuring From the Jam.

The band, which includes original members of the 70s group The Jam, will take to the stage at Nantwich Civic Hall on December 9 when the festival’s headline acts will be announced.

It will be the 15th annual festival to be staged over the Easter Bank Holiday and will follow last year’s performances from The Blockheads, Nearly Dan and Rumour of Fleetwood Mac.

Wolff Turns to the Blues

Michael Wolff’s stock in trade is the jazz piano. But as the instructor for the R&B ensemble at The New School in New York, he required prospective students to play either B.B. King’s “The Thrill is Gone” or Sly & the Family Stone’s “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)” during auditions.

“It makes me see how everything is connected,” Wolff said this week. “With jazz, a lot of people get pretty far away from the blues. Which is fine. But we ought to remember where it really started out. Jazz is based on the blues.”

The Blues in Bangalore

Since 2007, Nepal has been hosting an annual blues festival. Called the Himalayan Blues Festival, this annual music fiesta showcases some of the best blues artistes from across the globe. And this year, Nepal’s annual blues fiesta is making its journey into India, staging shows in Mumbai, Delhi and today in Bangalore.

“When I went to Kathmandu some time ago, I saw some fascinating blues music performances. I was surprised to see the love people there had for this genre of music,” says Gurudarshan Somayaji, musician and organizer of the festival.

London Jazz Festival Opens

So, the London Jazz Festival kicks off in, well, London, later today, with ten days of concerts in venues around the capital which may extend the definition of "jazz" somewhat, but which look rather fine all the same. The tickets may not have been as sought afterr as Take That Tour Tickets but they were still in demand.
